My 2022 Skincare Routine | Managing Rosacea, Texture, & Hyperpigmentation
Developing a skincare routine that works for your skin and specific concerns takes patience. Given the wide variety of products and procedures available, you may have to “date around” to see what works and doesn’t work for your skin. And remember: the best skincare routine is one you can stick to – most products require consistent and continued use to deliver optimal results.
When starting to build your skincare routine, I recommend following a minimalist routine for six weeks to ensure your skin’s moisture barrier is in tip-top shape before adding active ingredients such as exfoliating acids or retinoids.
Take this time to analyze your skin. Try taking a picture on day one, at the start of week three, and then at the end of week six. In my experience seeing these pictures will help you to see which of your concerns persist after repairing any barrier compromisation. Write down your concerns and then label them in order of importance. This list will become a valuable tool when you search for active ingredients and products to enhance your routine.
My own morning and evening routines have been pretty consistent since 2014, when I realized the importance of prioritizing my concerns and committing to the active ingredients that would address them. I’ve had some sort of skincare routine since Grade 8 (around 2004) when I began struggling with acne. When I started working in cosmetics in 2010, my routine became a bit chaotic as I wanted to try everything new at the retailer I worked at.
Despite being a little promiscuous with my product usage, I did have a few staples in my routine from 2009 to 2014, like the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, Olay Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixer, and Clinique Moisture Surge Hydrator. Then in 2014, the Cerave PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion and the Foaming Facial Cleanser became mainstays in my routine – and remain to this very day!
In 2016 when I first moved to Canada, I had some idle time on my hands, so I began watching YouTube and found Angie Hot & Flashy’s YouTube channel. I fell in love with her research-based skincare logic and desire to find the best value for ingredient-rich products, which led me to try out Timeless Skincare’s 20% Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid Serum, Coenzyme Q10 Serum, and the Matrixyl Synthe’6 Serum which are still part of my routine now – six years later!
Be sure to check out the video to see the rest of my skincare routine, and stay tuned to see which tools and at-home treatments are my favourites!
If you have tried any of these products, I would love to know your thoughts in the comments! Thank you so much for spending your time with me!
Warm Wishes
Zack
